How Much Battery Do You Need for Your Electronics?
Every fish finder, chartplotter and sonar unit draws a small, steady amount of current. Adding those numbers up tells you how much battery capacity (Ah) you need to run your electronics for a full day on the water.
Sizing Your Battery
- Add up the amp draw of every device you will run from the battery (see the chart below).
- Multiply that total by the number of hours you are usually on the water.
- Add 20% to the result. This extra capacity keeps the battery big enough for a 10-hour day or longer even after about 4 years of service.
Example (16V): two Humminbird Helix 10 units (2.16A each) plus a Garmin LiveScope (0.6A) draw 4.92A. Over a 10-hour day that is about 49Ah, and adding 20% brings it to about 59Ah, so a 16V 60Ah battery is the right fit.
12V vs 16V
The units listed below all operate above 16 volts, so running them on a 16V system has no effect on their warranty. On 16V they draw less current, which means roughly 20% longer run time from the same amp-hour rating, a separate clean power supply, better clarity and signal returns, and less heat for the units to absorb, so they run cooler. For example, a 16V 80Ah battery delivers similar run time to a 12V 100Ah battery.

Why choose 16V over 12V?
16 volt will give you a crisper, brighter image on your graphs. It does this while giving you better returns from your transducer, which results in clearer side, down and forward imaging, allowing you to unlock the full potential of your graphs and make you a better offshore fisherman. You may have already noticed that your console units, with the engine running at 14.6 volts, look slightly better than your bow units running at 12V; this is because of the increase in voltage. 16 volt is also 20% more efficient than 12 volt, meaning you will get longer run times than with the equivalent amp-hour rated 12 volt. For example, a 16V 80Ah will get similar run time to a 12V 100Ah.
What size wiring is needed to carry loads?
We suggest 10AWG to run from the batteries to the Perko switch and to the units. Our battery install kit comes with four 6 AWG battery cables to go to the Perko. If you choose to run main power to a separate fuse box, then you only need 14AWG, as a 16V system carries the load much better than 12V and will not drop voltage, especially since you are running each device on a separate circuit to the fuse box. The fuse box eliminates the factory fuse holders that are impossible to get to if a problem occurs on the water. The system will also accept wiring harnesses from other suppliers.
Can a deep cycle battery be used as a cranking battery?
No. This battery is designed to take the load off your cranking battery by running a separate clean power system to the devices. Deep cycle batteries and cranking batteries are designed for different purposes. So while it's technically possible to use a deep cycle battery as a cranking battery, it may not provide the quick burst of energy needed to start an engine efficiently. Cranking batteries are better suited for this purpose due to their design.
Do I need a specific charger for my 12V battery?
Technically you don't need a specific charger if your current charger has lithium charging capability. However, there are different charging options that allow you to retrofit your current onboard charging system to charge your dedicated electronics battery, for example the Run and Gun charging system.

PowerHouse Lithium Limited Warranty
Warranty Period
15-year total warranty (10 years non-prorated) on deep cycle batteries 40Ah and up
Coverage
- Free replacement of a defective battery any time within the first 60 months.
- Free repair of the battery from year 5 through year 10. During years 5 to 10 you may instead choose an expedited replacement battery at 30% off MSRP, which skips the 2 to 6 week repair turnaround and comes with a new 15-year warranty.
- Warranty items are subject to a $60 shipping cost from PowerHouse Lithium; this fee is waived for the first year.
- Warranty replacement value is based on current MSRP. Batteries over 10 years old are offered a replacement at 30% off MSRP.
Registration
Register your battery with PowerHouse Lithium within 90 days of purchase. If it is not registered within 90 days, the warranty period begins at the battery's manufacture date. Proof of ownership is required, and warranties are not transferable; this limited warranty applies to the original purchaser and to United States residents only.
Inspection and Service
A battery may need to be shipped to PowerHouse Lithium for inspection. If the inspection finds a manufacturing defect, the standard warranty process is followed at no charge. If the issue is caused by user error or misuse (for example, a dead battery from improper charging or not recharging a fully drained battery, over-tightened straps or terminal bolts, or loose connections that melt the terminals), a repair and shipping fee of up to $150 may apply. Have the battery's serial number ready when submitting a claim; it is on the side of the battery and in the PHL app.
Exclusions
The warranty does not cover water damage, impact or collision; physical damage to the battery case or mishandling; products that have been opened, modified or tampered with; tampering with or removal of manufacture date codes; or use in applications other than those the battery was designed for, or above its rated continuous current. It also does not cover a battery that has reached its normal end of life (2,000 cycles), which may occur before the end of the warranty period depending on use.
Obtaining Warranty Service
Submit a warranty claim through PowerHouse Lithium's warranty application. The product may need to be shipped back for inspection.
Visit PowerHouse Lithium's Warranty Policy to review the full warranty terms.
